What are the Requirements for Egg Donors?

Being an egg donor comes with many requirements. Because you are providing a family with a child, many families require physical and mental characteristics that they desire. It can also be a long process of screening, attorneys for the expecting parents, several medical visits (which includes physical and gynecological exams) and psychological evaluations.
  1. Egg Donation

    • Many women who wish to donate will be turned away because they do not meet requirements. This can include being adopted because there is no evidence of family history of diseases such as cancer or diabetes.

    Drug History

    • You cannot be a smoker, drug user or have any addiction to alcohol. Urine and blood samples will be taken to make sure there is not any concern of drug use.

    Weight

    • Many clinics recommend that you not be over weight (no more than 20 pounds more than your required weight) and have a Body Mass Index of 18 to 29 because of the drugs that will be taken to help with the egg donation process.

    Age

    • You need to be between 21 and 31 and in good health. Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have, and once you get to a certain age, the eggs begin to age, which results in abnormalities (something that is not wanted in egg donation).

    Applications

    • Women cannot have donated eggs more than six times (due to guidelines for the American Society of Reproductive Medicine).

    Education

    • You must have at least a high school diploma. However, women who have a college education are more likely to be preferred.
