Characteristics of Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are a common symptom of menopause, the process through which a woman ceases to menstruate. Though hot flashes affect all women differently, this phenomenon can often be characterized as an intense feeling of internal heat, accompanied by redness, perspiration and a rapid heartbeat. Hot flashes are often followed by goosebumps and chills. Some women experience severe symptoms while others' hot flashes are rather mild.
  1. Heat

    • The defining characteristic of a hot flash is an internal feeling of heat coming that affects mainly the face and top half of the body. The intensity can vary from mild to unbearable heat.

    Flushing and Redness

    • If you are experiencing a hot flash you will often flush at the face and turn red. Red, blotchy patches may also appear on other areas of the body, such as the chest or back.

    Perspiration

    • Hot flashes often cause you to perspire in response to the heat. Perspiration levels vary among women from mild sweating to heavy perspiration.

    Rapid Heartbeat

    • Another natural reaction to hot flashes in some women is a suddenly increased heart rate. Heart palpitations are another possible characteristic of hot flashes.

    Chills

    • You may go from feeling extreme heat to extreme cold as a result of perspiring. Hot flashes may end with you experiencing chills and goosebumps.
