Cause of Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness may make you feel self conscious and physically uncomfortable, especially during sexual intercourse. The symptoms of vaginal dryness include painful vaginal intercourse and difficulty having an orgasm. You can treat your symptoms with over-the-counter artificial lubricants or hormone treatments prescribed by your gynecologist. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Mayo Clinic, causes of vaginal dryness include stress and hormone changes.
  1. Stress

    • If you are experiencing emotional stress from problems with family, at home or work, you may have vaginal dryness during sex.

    Relationship Problems

    • Difficulties in the relationship between you and your partner may result in you not being responsive during intercourse, resulting in vaginal dryness.

    Birth Control

    • Irritations to your vagina caused by latex condoms or spermicidal jellies may cause vaginal dryness and burning sensations during sex.

    Childbirth

    • Your body may take several weeks or longer to recover after a vaginal delivery, and you may experience several months of vaginal dryness as a result.

    Breastfeeding

    • If you are breastfeeding your baby, you will have high levels of prolactin and oxytocin, which are hormones that promote milk production but can cause vaginal dryness.

    Menopause

    • During menopause, your body makes less estrogen and progesterone, which can interfere with your ability to become naturally lubricated during intercourse.
