Signs of Major Hormone Imbalance

Major hormonal imbalances in women can happen as a result of age (menopause), menstrual cycles, illness, or medication. It's advised for women to check with a medical professional if they experience long term symptoms as a result of imbalanced hormone levels.
  1. Low sex drive

    • For a woman who experiences unexpected changes in her libido, low sex drive could be an indicator of hormone imbalance. Women can combat these symptoms through hormone replacement therapy prescribed by a medical doctor.

    Fibrocystic Breasts

    • Fibrocystic (lumpy) breasts can be a result of major hormone changes. During monthly self-breast exams, if women find lumps in their breasts, they need to immediately consult a doctor.

    Irregular Menstrual Cycles

    • If women notice that their menstrual periods aren't consistent, hormonal imbalance could be the reason for fluctuating cycles. An irregular menstrual cycle can also indicate the first symptoms of menopause for women in their late forties and early fifties.

    Facial Hair Growth

    • Unexpected hair growth on the face, chin and neck could be a result of excessive hormones in women's bodies. Excessive hair growth could also be a result of a more serious medical condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (which produces high levels of male hormones and causes hair growth). Mood Swings

    • When women experience premenstrual syndromes or go through menopause, they can experience radical mood swings. Unexpected mood swings can be a result unbalanced hormone levels.
