Severe Early Menopause Symptoms

Premature menopause is the stopping of menstrual periods in women before the age of 40. Early menopause may be caused by premature ovarian failure, genetic disorders, and exposure to chemotherapy or radiation for cancer treatments. The symptoms of early menopause may be uncomfortable and distressing, but treatments and lifestyle changes may provide some relief.

    Hot Flashes

    • The lack of estrogen that causes menopause may result in body temperature fluctuations, especially hot flashes and sweating at night.

    Vaginal Dryness

    • Problems with vaginal dryness during sexual activity is a symptom of severely early menopause. This may cause discomfort and pain during intercourse.

    Libido

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, women with severely early menopause may lose their desire and interest in sexual activity.

    Memory

    • Symptoms including an inability to concentrate or focus on tasks and problems with memory lapses are common in women with severely early menopause.

    Depression

    • Experiencing menopause at a much earlier age than what is typical may result in depression, anxiety and loss of self-esteem.

    Osteoporosis

    • Estrogen protects women from bone loss (osteoporosis), and symptoms of severely early menopause may include loss of bone density and strength.
