Yeast Infection Symptoms & Causes

A yeast infection occurs after an overgrowth of yeast or candida develops in or around the mucus membranes and surrounding skin of areas such as the mouth, vagina or penis. Vaginal yeast infections are common, and the symptoms can be treated from home. Once the causes are known, there are measures to take that may prevent repeat infections. The following are symptoms and causes of vaginal yeast infections.
  1. Identification

    • An odorless, thick and clumpy, white discharge emitting from the vagina is a common symptom of a vaginal yeast infection.

    Effects

    • Vaginal discomfort can occur both internally and externally with redness, itching, burning, soreness and irritation that may worsen during urination and sexual intercourse.

    Considerations

    • Hormonal changes because of menstrual cycles, birth control pills and pregnancy are all common causes of vaginal yeast infections.

    Potential

    • Tight or wet clothing, especially made of non-natural materials, trap moisture, allowing for yeast overgrowth and subsequently, an infection.

    Warning

    • A weakened immune system because of HIV, chemotherapy or steroid use can leave the body more susceptible to repeated yeast infections.
