How to Thread Wrap Hair

Thread wrapping is a popular approach to hair styling among tweens and teens. It can be a fun activity to undertake when young girls get together for a sleepover party, or when they're just hanging out after school. If a teen becomes knowledgeable about thread-wrapping hair, she can even earn some money doing it. Carnivals, amusement parks and town fairs have booths that pay for each hair wrap completed. The teen could even offer her services at a birthday party for a few extra dollars.

  Separate a section of hair from the rest. This is done by putting all of the hair in a hairband except the piece you are going to use for the thread wrap. The piece of hair can be any size that you want, but smaller is better, because it will use up less thread and won't look so bulky.

  Pick out two to four colors of thread. Any more than four, and you are going to start getting tangled up.

  Hold the thread up to the hair and cut it about 2 feet past the ends of the hair. You can use measuring tape if you aren't good at eyeballing the measurement.

  Tie a knot at the top of the strings to keep them all together.

  Tie the thread to the top of the section of hair. Use a regular knot. Allow the string to hang down

  Use one color at a time and hold the other colors with the piece of hair you are wrapping. You will be wrapping the other colors at the same time, until it is their turn to make knots.

  Loop the thread around the piece of hair and tie a simple knot. Pull the knot until it goes all the way to the top. It should do this easily. Make one knot at a time, then pull the string until it reaches the top. After about six to eight knots, you can switch to another color.

  Put the color you were just using with the piece of hair and the other colors. Take your new color and wrap it around the piece of hair and tie a knot. Pull the string as before until the color reaches the top. Again, make about six to eight knots, then switch colors. If you are only using two colors, you can simply alternate until you have reached the end of the piece of hair.

  Tie a few knots past the end of the hair, then double-knot the end.

  Cut off any excess thread.
