How to Reposition a Tampon

One of the most uncomfortable aspects of having your period can be a tampon positioned the wrong way. A tampon that isn't inserted correctly can create an annoying sensation and vaginal irritation. The most hygienic way to fix this is to take out the tampon and insert a new one, but if you're down to your last one and you're deft with your hands, you might be able to reposition the tampon.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands, since you're about to place them into your vagina. Use warm water, soap and dry carefully on a clean towel.

    • 2

Stand with your legs spread apart. To get the best angle, you might want to prop one foot up on the toilet or bathtub--especially if this is your first attempt at repositioning a tampon.

    • 3

Using your fingers, follow the tampon string all the way up until you feel where the tampon begins. You should feel the base of the tampon. If you didn't insert it all the way, you might feel a good half inch or more of the tampon outside your labia.

    • 4

Push firmly but gently on the base of the tampon to ease it deeper into your vagina. Push until you can't feel any of the tampon outside your labia and it's completely contained inside your vagina.

    • 5

Wash your hands again with soap and water. Then go to the store and buy more tampons. Repositioning a tampon is a quick fix when you're running low or have left the house without enough tampons in your purse, but it's not the healthiest way to deal with a tampon inserted the wrong way. Your best bet is to start from scratch with a newer tampon and insert it more deeply this time.
