How to Explain PMS to a Preteen

Your preteen daughter is growing up. You have two options for dealing with the PMS mood swings of your preteen. You can explain, in hopes she'll recognize her PMS symptoms and realize she's being unreasonable; or throw a case of chocolate into the fray and run like the house is on fire.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your preteen when she's in a good mood. You have only 2 days during the month to accomplish this task, so dive in when the opportunity presents itself. Make sure you're alone and unlikely to be interrupted by a male family member. Preteen girls are easily horrified.

    • 2

Explain the changes happening to her body. Tell her it's normal to feel achy and bloated before her period begins. She may also feel hungry and cranky (achy and bloated's ugly cousins). These unwelcome guests make up a few of the joys of being female.

    • 3

Sympathize with her PMS mood swings, but remind her to keep them in check. Suggest she hang out in her room when she's feeling ornery, as it gives her some time to relax. (It also gives you time to escape-keep those car keys handy.)

    • 4

Tell her about relief options. Keep a heating pad and bubble bath under the bathroom sink. Stock caffeinated beverages and have a bottle of Ibuprofen ready. Assure her that she can still participate in usual activities, and that exercise can lessen PMS symptoms.

    • 5

Inform her that PMS has its uses. She must pay close attention to her body, but in doing so, she can prepare for her impending period and not be caught unawares.

    • 6

Ask if she has any questions or wants to share any thoughts. Ignore the eyeball rolling that ensues. She appreciates the tips you gave her, but don't expect her to say so.

    • 7

Allow her to withdraw to her room to consider the icky-ness of your discussion. Slide a chocolate bar under the door and retreat to safer ground.
