Water Birth Checklist
-
A Comfortable Tub
-
The most important element of a water birth is the tub. Some birthing centers and hospitals offer specialized water birthing tubs. For home births, if you do not have a large jet-style tub in your home, you can rent one from companies who specialize in water births and will usually ship for a small fee. They are large, blow-up tubs that fit in most living rooms. Some come with jets for added comfort, and others are more basic.
A Tarp or Large Tablecloth
-
For a home water birth, a tarp or tablecloth should be placed under the birthing tub prior to filling to protect flooring.
Terrycloth Towels
-
Terrycloth towels should be readily available during a water birth to make a walkway for mother and baby to leave the tub safely without slipping on the slick tarp, and for drying purposes.
A Flashlight
-
To help her relax while giving birth, sometimes the mother-to-be wants the lights turned off. A flashlight is helpful when you are in low-light situations and need to get around.
A Lead-Free Hose
-
To fill the tub, you will need a hose connected to an outside or inside spigot. The water hose should be "drinking water safe." These are free of harmful elements, such as lead.
Warm Water
-
Warm water is essential for keeping the mother-to-be comfortable during the water birth. Water should be warmed on a stove constantly during labor and added as needed.
Baby-Care Kit
-
For a home water birth, this should include sterilized scissors, a cord clamp, umbilical cord care pads, diapers, hats, infant lotion and swaddling blankets for the new arrival. It should be packed beforehand and close at hand.
Medical Kit
-
This should include cotton balls, swabs, gauze and antibiotic ointment.
