How do I Change a Quickie Wheel Chair Tire?

Quickie wheelchairs are a part of Southwest Medical, which has supplied home medical equipment for more than 20 years. Quickie offers a wide variety of wheelchairs, including ultralight in both folding and rigid frames, power and sports chairs. The tires of the wheelchair will need to be changed periodically. The tires of Quickie wheelchairs are very similar to that of bike tires. Changing the tire takes just a few minutes and a few simple tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wheel from the wheelchair. The wheel will have a lever that can be turned to loosen the wheel. If needed, use a wrench to loosen the bolt if it is stuck.

    • 2

Deflate the tire. Unscrew the cap from the tire valve. Depress the center portion of the valve to deflate the tire. Hold the center until you no longer hear air escaping from the tire.

    • 3

Loosen the bead on the tire. Hold the tire between your fingers and thumbs and work the tire back and forth to loosen the bead. Use tire levers to break the bead. Insert the tire lever between the tire and the wheel. Hook the opposite end of the tire lever onto a spoke. Insert a second tire level a few inches from the first. Slide the tire level around the tire to slide the inside of the tire off the wheel. Remove tube from the inside of the tire once the tire comes off.

    • 4

Use the air compressor to partially inflate the new tube. Listen for any leaks. Inspect the tube for any blemishes that may create holes in the tube. Examine the interior of the tire for any debris or blemishes that may damage the tube before replacing the tube back into the tire. Look over the outside of the tire to make sure there are not cuts, tears or cracks in the tire. Reinsert the partially inflated tube back into the tire.

    • 5

Slide the tire with the tube inserted back onto the wheel. Place the valve through the valve hole and push the tire back into place, working the wheel with both hands at the same time. Tire levers may be used if the tire is too tight to push into place with your hands.

    • 6

Reattach the wheel using the bolt to hold the wheel in place. Make sure the bolt is tight and the wheel will not fall off during normal use.
