Minnesota Assisted Living Requirements

The Minnesota Department of Health is the regulating agency for assisted living homes in the state. According to reports by the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 600,000 people over the age of 65 living in Minnesota. With the elderly population increasing, assisted living homes are becoming popular choices for senior housing.
  1. Assessments

    • All residents must undergo an assessment by a registered nurse before moving into an assisted living facility. When this is completed, the nurse outlines plans for the resident's care and shares it with the senior and his family.

    Medications

    • Minnesota residents in assisted living facilities can administer their own medications. A licensed individual must order the medications. Staff members can assist or administer to residents if asked or if needed.

    Licensing

    • Minnesota assisted living facilities must hold a license and adhere to the rules of the Department of Health. There must be staff available 24 hours a day, registered nurses on call or on duty on all times, a minimum of two meals per day, and the facility must provide laundry and housekeeping assistance. For residents who need it, the facility must provide assistance to help them groom and dress.

    Building Codes

    • Minnesota requires assisted living homes to adhere to state building codes, including zoning and fire codes. There must also be a cooking facility in the building for residents to use.

    Medicaid

    • Residents who need assistance paying for an assisted living facility in Minnesota can get partial help from Medicaid. The program does not pay for room and board costs, although feeding and grooming are covered.

    Staff Training

    • Staff members must undergo orientation before working at a Minnesota assisted living facility. Employees without a license who perform nursing duties must take an annual competency test. They also must enroll in and complete eight hours of continuing education training.
