How to Keep the Elderly in Their Homes

Many elderly people prefer to stay in their own homes, but sometimes the choice is taken out of their hands. Making plans and intervening at a time before home arrangements are in crisis can help avoid the need for a nursing home. Lack of help at earlier stages could lead to falls, which in turn leads to loss of confidence. The difficulty often is in deciding when intervention is necessary.

Instructions

    • 1
Encourage the older person to go on trips and outings.

Encourage the older person to take positive steps to maintain her well-being and independence. These include eating properly, interacting with others and maintaining her mobility. Accompany the elderly person on walks and outings and help her to engage with others with similar interests. Look into lunch groups or day centers in the area.

    • 2

Help the older person to install any adaptations to his home to make life easier. These may include hand rails, special showers and non-slip flooring. A change of home is sometimes a good idea.

    • 3

Visit the older person frequently, and ensure she can reach you, or reach some other assistance in case of emergency. Ask a friendly neighbor to look in on her regularly. Discuss current affairs with her, and encourage her to read newspapers and follow favorite TV shows. Encourage her to keep a pet if she is able to cope with this.

    • 4

Involve the older person in family celebrations and holidays. Make sure he has something to look forward to. Ensure he keeps appointments with the physician, optician, dentist and other healthcare providers. Take him, if necessary. Observe for any deterioration in physical or mental health, and seek help from his doctor. Consider employing private care services to help care for the elderly person at home.
