How to Compare AARP Health Plans

AARP (formerly the American Association for Retired People), a nonprofit membership organization, has been serving members age 50 and up since it was first founded in 1958. AARP does not insure individuals, but it does provide assistance to seniors who are looking for a health plan. Therefore, they created the AARP Health website, where seniors can compare different types of health plans to determine what options are available to them. There are different options for those between the ages of 50 and 64, and those who are age 65 and older.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the AARP Health website. The website will have several options, but to receive information on health insurance plans endorsed by the AARP, you will need to scroll down the list of insurance products by age group.

    • 2

Choose between the two options "Age 50-64 Insurance Products" and "Age 65+ Insurance Products," based on your age. You will be taken to a page that lists products that are specific to your age group. (A third option, "Products for All Ages," discussions other types of health-related insurance such as dental and long-term care.)

    • 3

Select a product that is offered. For ages 50 to 64, there are two options: "Major Medical Coverage" and "Supplemental Options." For ages 65+, there are three options: "Medicare Supplement Plans," "Medicare Advantage" and "Medicare Prescription Drug Plans."

    • 4

Follow the instructions given for whichever option you choose. Some options will offer to take you to the provider's website, where you can view the plans available; other options will prompt for answers to a few questions in order to provide you with a list of plans to compare.

    • 5

Compare the list of plans given and decide which one best fits your needs. If cost is a factor, then you may want to choose the cheapest plan. If comprehensive coverage is a factor, then you may want to choose the plan that offers the most coverage. What you decide to compare from each plan will depend on your personal situation and what you deem important.
