How to Get a Certificate in Assistive Technology

Assistive technology uses low and high technology to help people with disabilities adjust to everyday life and become more independent. Examples of assistive technologies include hearing aids, speech recognition software, motorized wheelchairs, and text recognition devices for telephones. People who are certified in assistive technology can say that they have the knowledge and skills needed to recommend assistive technoogy products and train people to use assistive technology, as proven by a third party.

      Complete the prerequisites. To qualify to take the test for certification, you must have at least a high school diploma, and some job-related experience and training in assistive technology. See the resource section for the specific prerequisites.

      Send in an application. You will first have to send in an application to the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America. This is the society that provides the testing for certification. See the link to RESNA in the reference section.

      Pay money. The fee to take the certifying test is $500. The money may be submitted with the application.

      Study for the test. The certification test has 200 questions, related to the assessment of assistive technology needs, suggesting the best possible technology for the need, implementing the suggestions, evaluating the success or shortcomings of the implementations, and professionalism. Study guides for the test are listed in the resource section.

      Take the test. Once the association approves your application, you will receive a list of the centers where you may go to take the certification test. The test is administered on line in centers throughout the United States. Test results will be given to you immediately following the test.

      Receive the certification. If you pass the test, your certificate will be mailed from RENSA, and you will receive it in about ten days.
