How to Maintain an Elderly Diet

A proper elderly diet plays a huge part in keeping an elderly person healthy. Many times elderly people want to eat and drink the same way they did in younger years. The problem with this is that in later years the body doesn't handle it well. It may be difficult to accept, but changes must be made.

To manage an elderly diet you first need to understand that energy needs change. The metabolism slows down and so does the body. Therefore, fewer calories are needed or excessive weight gain is likely. It's hard enough on a young person to be overweight let alone an elderly one.

Choose calorie intake according to activity level. An elderly person who is quite active will need more calories than one who is bed ridden. There may be some trial and error to get it just right. Use a food journal and calorie counting device to keep track of how many calories eaten.

More fiber is needed and should be increased a little at a time to avoid diarrhea. Easy to consume soft fiber foods are best such as oatmeal, high fiber soup like split pea, steamed veggies, fruits/juices and whole grains. Serve small portions, but plenty of variety.

An elderly diet should also be low in fat, especially when it comes to dairy and meat. Reduce red meat and go with fish, poultry, nuts and beans for sufficient protein. Choose low fat yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese and milk for dairy.

Consume sugar, salt and refined carbohydrates in moderation. Nothing is altogether off limits unless the doctor says so. It's okay to eat a favorite dessert or meal now and then as long as you don't overdo it. An elderly diet is a lifestyle not just a way to eat for a month or two.

When an elderly person eats as recommended they will be more likely to keep blood pressure and cholesterol numbers normal. They will also be much healthier and not need as many or any medications, which all have bad side effects.

An elderly person who is underweight and refuses to eat has special needs. To get them to eat find out what it is that they enjoy. For example, if they love flowers offer flowers as a reward. It could be someplace they want to go or something they want to do whatever it is use it.

Keep an eating schedule and stay as on time as possible. Elderly people need structure and at times get upset if things aren't timely. Plan the meals, so that they know what is being served each meal every day.

Make sure an elderly diet includes plenty of water/liquids. Staying hydrated is very important since the body's water content lowers with age. Include a variety of healthy drinks such as lemonade, gatorade, herbal tea etc.

Extra calcium and vitamin D are needed, as the body ages it doesn't absorb it as well. Supplements are okay as long as they are taken properly, so ask a nutritionist about dosage and inform the doctor.
