Electric Wheelchair Information

Electric wheelchairs provide mobility for those who might otherwise be housebound, giving them freedom to live their lives as normally as possible. Electric wheelchairs come in a variety of designs and capabilities.

Drive Type

• Electric wheelchairs come in many different drive variations. Some are front wheel drive, some are rear wheel drive, and some are center wheel driven. They also can come in three, four, and even six wheel variants.

Indoor/Outdoor

• Some electric wheelchairs are only built for use inside, or very limited outside use. Others are built more robustly to allow continuous outdoor use without worry of dust and water causing problems.

Weight Capacity

• Another consideration for electric wheelchairs is their weight capacity. An electric wheelchair needs to not only accommodate the rider, but anything the rider may need to carry with them.

Portability

• Some electric wheelchairs are built specifically with portability in mind. These wheelchairs have a limited weight capacity, as well as a limited range due to smaller batteries.

Ease of Use

• Front wheel drive wheelchairs have a better turning radius than those with rear wheel drive. Center wheel drive wheelchairs have the best turning radius because they can rotate in place.
