How to Find Help for Elder Abuse in Ontario

Abuse comes in all shapes and forms, and no one who suffers from physical, mental, emotional or neglectful abuse should have to remain a victim. Assistance for elders to fight abuse and receive support after abuse has taken place can be found across Ontario. Elders who are abused sometimes find that the hardest part of getting out of an abusive relationship is just starting the process of looking for help. Assistance can take the form of emotional support, legal support or medical support.

Report the abuse to the police so they can investigate the crime and guide the elderly person to services for abuse victims. Submit the report to the local police department in your town or city. Give the police the name of the person who is abused, the name of the abuser and the type of abuse that is involved.

Report the elder abuse to the Public Health Agency of Canada. Offices are located all over Ontario. You can find the location of the closest one at the website (phac-aspc.gc.ca/contac-eng.php).

Report the abuse to the Ontario Network for Protection Against Elder Abuse hotline at 1-866-299-1011. The person who answers the phone can direct the elderly person to resources within his or her town and community.

Request legal protection from the abuser through the Ontario legal system. A court can order that the abuser stay away from the elderly person if the court deems there is a clear danger.
