What is a BLS ambulance?
A BLS ambulance, also known as a basic life support (BLS) ambulance or a Type I ambulance, is a type of emergency medical services (EMS) vehicle that is designed to provide basic life-saving care and transportation for patients in non-life-threatening situations. BLS ambulances are staffed with at least two trained emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who are able to provide basic medical care, such as:
- CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
- Defibrillation (use of an AED)
- Oxygen administration
- Immobilization of fractures
- Control of severe bleeding
- Medication administration (as prescribed by medical protocols)
- Monitoring vital signs
BLS ambulances are typically used for non-emergency medical situations, such as:
- Medical appointments
- Routine transports
- Minor injuries
- Non-life-threatening medical conditions
They can also be used as support units at major incidents or disasters, where additional resources are needed. BLS ambulances are commonly used in rural and suburban areas, where response times may be longer and there is a lower incidence of life-threatening medical emergencies. However, they can also be found in urban areas as backup units or for non-emergency patient transports.
