Luer Lock Syringe Hub Tips
Modern plastic syringes can be purchased with needles in place or needles and syringes can be purchased separately. Some needles have a simple hub that slides onto the tip of the syringe; they also somewhat easily slide off the syringe, such as in the process of uncapping the needle. Luer lock syringes require a compatible needle whose hub twists onto the tip of the syringe and locks in place.-
Compatibility
-
When using a luer lock syringe, be sure to use a compatible needle. If you use a needle with a simple hub that is designed to slide onto the tip of the syringe, known as a "slip-fit" syringe, you will not get the secure lock of the luer lock design.
Attachment Technique
-
To attach the needle to the syringe, simply place the needle hub onto the tip of the syringe and gently twist the barrel of the syringe in a clockwise direction until it is secure. Be sure to use aseptic technique -- when attaching to the syringe, hold the needle cap either by the partially unwrapped package or by the plastic covering that remains after breaking the seal.
Leak-free Fitting
-
Not only are luer lock syringes designed to stay securely attached, they also are designed to be leak free. To get this secure fit, be sure to attach the needle snugly to the syringe.
Customized Luer Lock Systems
-
Many adaptations have been designed for the luer lock system. Various companies, such as VitaNeedle, also customize luer lock needles and syringe systems for unique needs.
