How to Properly Attach a Hoyer Lift Sling

Hoyer lifts, or sling lifts, are used to transfer patients with limited mobility, such as from a bed to a wheelchair. Lifts are wheeled, crane-like devices powered manually or electrically to which the sling is attached. Slings are available in a variety of styles and sizes to accommodate a patient's needs. But U-slings, which wrap around the patient's thigh and cross between the legs, are the most commonly used. Proper attachment of the sling minimizes the risk of injury to the patient during transfer.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather all necessary supplies, such as the sling, lift and a chair or wheelchair. Place these items near the bed for easy access.

    • 2

Raise the patient's bed to your waist height, if possible. This minimizes back strain and injury as you position the sling.

    • 3

Assist patient in rolling onto his side. If using a hospital-style bed and patient's condition allows, encourage the patient to hold onto the bed's side rail.

    • 4

Fold the sling according to the instructions provided for the sling model you are using. Several different sizes and styles of U-slings are available.

    • 5

Position the back portion of the U-sling just above the small of the patient's back and assist the patient in rolling onto his back. Pull the leg loops of the sling forward under the thighs.

    • 6

Cross the loops between the patient's legs. Crossing the loops prevents the patient from sliding out of the sling as it is lifted and gives the patient a greater feeling of security.

    • 7

Position the lift under the patient's bed with legs open and wheels locked. Lower the lift over the patient's bed until it is close enough to attach the sling. Unlock the wheels before beginning to lift the patient.

    • 8

Use the openings in the loops to attach each side of the sling to one side of the lift bar. Make sure to hang loops evenly on each side. If you are using a sling or lift with chains, consult the instructions for the lift model on how to attach the S-hooks and chains.

    • 9

Raise the lift until the patient's buttocks are slightly above the mattress and gently turn the patient so his feet dangle over the side of the bed. Steer the lift slowly to the wheelchair or other destination and lock the wheels again.

    • 10

Lower the patient onto the wheelchair and remove the sling. To avoid patient discomfort or injury, always remove the sling after a transfer is completed.
