How to Get Water into a Rubber Syringe

Rubber syringes have multiple uses such as suctioning out mucus or formula from a baby's nose or mouth. It is imperative that after each use, clean rubber syringes are thoroughly cleaned to prevent the growth of bacteria. Part of cleaning your rubber syringe involves getting water inside it. To get water in a rubber syringe, use a technique similar to when it you use it to remove mucus. These basic steps will walk you through the process.

      Pour some hot soapy water in a container. Put the tip of the rubber syringe into the water, then firmly squeeze the bulb (the round upper part) with your thumb.

      Slowly release the pressure from the bulb to fill the syringe with water. Swish the water around inside the rubber syringe by shaking it vigorously.

      Use your thumb to press down on the bulb of the rubber syringe to empty the water. Repeat the above steps to get clean water into the syringe. Shake the water around to rinse the inside of the syringe, then release the water.

      Sterilize the rubber syringe with 70% isopropyl. Draw the alcohol into the syringe by pressing down on the bulb. Swish the alcohol around, then release it. Place the rubber syringe in a clean glass with the tip facing down. Leave it in that position so it can drain thoroughly.
