How to Find a Power Chair

A power chair is a device that can help you regain your mobility if you are disabled or elderly and can no longer walk or stand for long periods of time, or at all for that matter. Once you decide that you can benefit from using a power chair, this does not necessarily mean you know the best way to go about finding one, however. Finding the right power chair for your needs and your budget is very important. After all, you might be using the same power chair for years to come. (Reference 1, 2)

  Talk to your doctor. Your doctor can provide you with recommendations for medical suppliers, as well as a letter verifying that you need a power chair so that some or all of the expense can be covered by medical insurance or Medicare. (Reference 1)

  Talk to your healthcare provider. A list of medical supply companies in your area that accept your insurance can be provided to you. (Reference 1)

  Contact Medicare. Together, Medicare and your supplementary insurance provider often cover the whole expense of a power chair. You will need to go through a medical supply company that accepts Medicare if you're using it to pay for a portion of your power chair. (Reference 2)

  Visit the medical suppliers to find a power chair that fits your needs. Test out the chair before purchasing to make sure you can reach the controls and are comfortable sitting in it.
