How to Check a Plastic Surgeon's Record

Having elective cosmetic surgery is a major decision that carries inherent risks no matter what procedure you're planning to undergo. The best way to minimize these risks is to select a reputable plastic surgeon to perform your operation, which isn't always an easy task, especially in major metropolitan centers where there are many doctors to choose from. Before you go under the knife, or even make a commitment to a particular doctor, it is imperative that you take the time to do your own background research on the plastic surgeon you're planning to work with.

Instructions

  1. Gather Information

    • 1

Ask the physician where he went to medical school and what year he graduated.

    • 2

Inquire about hospital affiliations. All reputable plastic surgeons have a hospital affiliation, and it is recommended that you avoid doctors who are not affiliated with any hospital, regardless of the reason(s) the surgeon may give you.

    • 3

Gather referrals to past patients who are willing to give the doctor an endorsement by inquiring at the surgeon's office. While doctor-patient confidentiality may legitimately be cited as a reason why no such referrals are available, it may be possible to contact previous patients if you want to ask about the surgeon's reliability. At the very least, the plastic surgeon should offer a collection of "before and after" photos of patients who have undergone the same procedure you're considering.

    Check the Credentials

    • 4

Confirm that the doctor attended the medical school he indicated in the year that he indicated. You can cross-check this information with your state's medical licensing board, or be directed to other resources by contacting the medical school directly.

    • 5

Check to make sure the plastic surgeon is registered with the American Board of Medical Specialists, a nationwide organization for doctors who specialize in specific fields of medicine.

    • 6

Run a background check on the plastic surgeon through the Federation of State Medical Boards to make sure there are no outstanding complaints or pending disciplinary actions against the plastic surgeon you're considering. If there are, choose a different doctor.
