  Identify an individual or group to oversee the program. An effective program needs leadership and direction so proper classes and topics are presented. At California Pacific Medical Center, the Continuing Medical Education Committee plans and oversees continuing education for medical staff.

  Identify required topics to present. Annual, mandatory training may be required by governing agencies or state laws. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) require some topics to be reviewed on a regular basis. Required topics may include hand washing and proper patient lifting.

  Seek input from staff. Different staff members may require different classes and content. For example, physicians will require different topics and number of hours than a registered nurse.
