How to Donate Used Medical Supplies

The United States offers some of the most advanced medical care in the world. However, many other countries are not as fortunate. They do not have the supplies needed to treat and help heal certain medical conditions. But you can help others in need by donating your old medical supplies to organizations that supply third-world countries and individuals living in poverty with the necessary equipment to get better and function on a daily basis.

Clean out your house. Search for old medical supplies you no longer need. These can include wheelchairs, crutches, canes, walkers, old glasses, slings, walking boots, wrist, knee or ankle braces and assistive items such as shower chairs. You may also have old items from home physical therapy programs -- such as resistance bands or stress balls.

Locate an organization near you that accepts donations. The American College of Surgeons' Operation Giveback provides a list of agencies organized by state. These organizations may provide medical equipment to the poor or equipment for surgeons and doctors in developing countries.

    • 3

Set up a donation time. You may have to drop off or mail your donations depending on your location and the organization to which you choose to donate. Some organizations may come to you to pick up your donations.

Ask for a receipt. Donations are tax deductible.
