How to Get a Job at a Hospital for a Pre-Medical Student

Working in a hospital is a means for pre-medical students to familiarize themselves with the inner-workings of the health care field. Hospital work provides insight into possible specialties and career opportunities and the decision if the medical field is where the student wants to be. A student can apply for a paying job, complete an internship, job shadow or look for volunteer opportunities in his local hospital.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a cover letter and resume. Include in your cover letter reasons why you are excited to have the opportunity to work in a hospital as a pre-medical student. If possible, obtain a letter of recommendation from a professor.

    • 2

Ask your professors or guidance counselors if they are aware of any jobs for pre-medical students with local hospitals.

    • 3

Visit your local hospital's website. Search the career portion of the site. Complete a search for student, part-time and internship opportunities. Jobs may include transporting patients around a hospital, working as an office assistant for a physician's office or nurse assistant jobs -- many hospitals will train you to work as a nursing assistant. Apply for the type of jobs that interest you. Apply for multiple jobs to increase your chances of obtaining a job.

    • 4

Look for job shadowing opportunities. Call local hospitals and ask what their policy is on job shadowing. You will likely not be paid for this opportunity, but you will work closely with a physician and follow their every move.

    • 5

Offer to volunteer in the hospital. This is unpaid but it provides you with the opportunity to get your foot in the door and meet individuals in the medical field. Volunteer opportunities exist across most hospital systems and most welcome students. Volunteers may sit and keep patients company or work in a gift shop, for example.
