How to Report Changes in Disability

The Social Security Administration reviews disability cases on a regular basis to ensure that the recipients receiving benefits still qualify according to the agency's rules. How often you receive a review depends on the type of disability you have and your prognosis. If your condition improves during that time, you must notify the administration. If you do not notify them and you continue to collect benefits, you may be responsible for repaying the funds.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your physician to schedule a medical examination. If your condition has improved to the extent that your physician feels that you can return to work, you must contact the administration and report the change. If your condition has not improved or has worsened, no further action is required.

    • 2

Contact your local Social Security office about the change in person, by phone or by mail (Reference 2). Include your claim number and report that you returned to work or your physician has determined that you may be able to return. Present or send in the exam report and any other records you have that document your change in health.

Ask family members who are receiving benefits based on your disability to report the change. Separate reporting is required because they will have different claim numbers. Your report will not cover their status. They may have to repay their benefits if they do not report to the agency. The family members can also report your condition change in person at the local Social Security office, or by phone or mail. They must provide their claim numbers and any medical reports or documents related to your condition.
