How to Write a Complaint Letter to a Doctor

As a patient, you expect the best medical care possible when visiting a doctor's office, outpatient facility or spending time in the hospital. Bedside manner and appropriate medical care can put you at ease during a time that may be difficult. Unfortunately, medical care is not always provided in a smooth, patient-friendly manner. When you feel you have received poor medical care or treatment, you have the right to let your doctor know.

  Act quickly. Ensure you include all details of your experience by writing your complaint letter as soon as possible.

  Address the doctor specifically. Include the doctor's name on the letter and include the doctor's name on the envelope following the word "Attention:".

  Remember the details specific to your complaint. Include the exact date, office or hospital location and procedure, if applicable. If other individuals were involved in your care, including nurses, resident doctors, technicians or medical assistants, include their names in your complaint.

  Stick with the facts of the situation. Avoid exaggerating the truth. Even though you are upset, exaggerating the truth can have a negative effect on individuals involved in your compliant. Explain the situation exactly as it occurred. Follow with a statement on your reasons for sending the letter and an explanation of any compensation you are seeking.

  Explain your feelings about things that could have been done to prevent the situation or in which it could have been handled more appropriately. Doctors tend to value the input of their patients when running a medical practice.

  Include supporting information or paperwork. If you have bills or medical records related to your complaint, include them as an attachment.
