How to Become a Listed Provider for Aetna

Aetna is the one of largest providers of health, dental, life and group insurance in the country. Over 18 million people have health insurance through Aetna with access to over one million doctors. By becoming an Aetna listed provider, medical professionals have access to millions of insured patients and rewards for providing quality, cost-effective care for patients.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete Aetna's online Medical Request Form. Potential providers must include a tax identification number, medical specialty and degrees, a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number and hospital affiliations.

    • 2

Wait for your new provider registration packet. The packet arrives within seven to 10 business days and includes an Aetna ID number and instructions on how to fill out the Council for Affordable Quality Health Care's (CAQH) Universal Credentialing DataSource (UPD) application. According to CAQH, the UPD is used by all major health plans to accelerate the credentialing process and remove the need for providers to fill out multiple provider applications.

    • 3

Complete the UPD application and grant authorization for Aetna to view your information. The application can be found on the CAQH website and applicants must provide evidence of licensure, board certification, malpractice insurance and verification of admitting privileges at an Aetna participating hospital. Aetna only accepts provider credentialing from the UPD application.

    • 4

Wait for a letter stating your listed provider status from Aetna. The company takes care in credentialing medical providers, so it may take several weeks to receive conformation.
