How to File Complaints for Handicapped Persons

People who have handicaps or disabilities have the same civil and legal rights as people without handicaps. If a person who is disabled feels that he has a complaint to file against someone, there are proper avenues to take to have the complaints heard. Each individual has the right to speak up and discuss the reasons he feels that he has been unjustly treated, and he can advocate for change to occur through formal complaints.

  Document the discrimination or other reason for complaint every time that it occurs. Write down the information in a notebook or have someone write it down for you. Take pictures of the information if you can so that you have proof that the incident took place. Ask witnesses to write a written statement regarding the incident and keep a copy for your files.

  Write a formal letter of complaint by typing it on a computer or typewriter. Calmly discuss each related incident in the order that they happened. Attach a copy of all documentation to the letter and keep the original documentation for your files.

  Send a copy of the complaint letter to the company or person that you have a complaint against and give the person a chance to clarify what happened and correct the circumstances. Document that you sent the letter. If the person or company does not respond in a satisfactory manner then you know you have a true issue against the company or person.

  Contact the Department of Health and Human Services in your state and request information as to how to file a complaint against a company. Contact the Office of Disabilities in your state and let the office know what occurred. Show copies of all your documentation including the letter of complaint that you sent to the company or person that started the issue. Contact the Disability Rights Section, Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and send a written statement of complaint to the division.
