How to Use a Miltex 20-2

Miltex creates a line of Vienna nasal speculums. The 20-2 is the largest of the models. It's primary use is for inspection of the nasal cavity by licensed physicians or emergency room personnel. Made up of a handle with two relatively flat blades, the speculum is designed so that squeezing the handles separates the blades, thus opening the nose up for inspection. Be sure to move slowly, as to avoid patient discomfort, and do not use medical tools without the proper training.

Instructions

    • 1

Grip the speculum in your left hand. Your right hand should be free to hold a flashlight or other instrument. Use the thumb and index finger to hold the instrument, and practice opening and closing the blades by applying pressure with your middle and ring finger, until it feels comfortable.

    • 2

Align the blades with the nostrils. With your patient slightly reclined, move the blades up toward the nasal passages and in-line with the nostrils. Then, with the blades closed, move the speculum up and backwards into the nose. Once inside, slowly compress the handle to separate the blades.

    • 3

Check the roof, floor and all walls of the nose. The speculum can also be used to check for a deviated septum. Inspect both the position and the surface of the septum for spurs, ulcers, perforations, or any aberrations. Also, be aware of the presence of discolored mucus, pus or polyps. If you find something out of the ordinary, report it for further medical attention or tests.

Repeat in other nostril. Always sanitize the Miltex 20-2 thoroughly between uses.
