Support Groups for Victims of Medical Errors
Mistakes can and do happen when doctors perform surgery, monitor sick patients or prescribe medicine. In a groundbreaking 1999 report, the Institute of Medicine estimated that 44,000 to 98,000 people in the United States die each year due to medical errors. A Baylor University study also found that errors occurred in writing or filling about 10 percent of prescriptions. People who have been victims of medical errors do have somewhere to turn for help, including support groups and on-line clearinghouses for information.-
