How to Apply for the Nursing Board in Another State

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is an association made up of the individual State Boards of Nursing. The NCSBN also administers the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), the exam used for the licensing of nurses in the United States. If you are a licensed nurse in the United States and have passed the NCLEX exam, you can typically apply for the Nursing Board in another state.

  Contact the State Board of Nursing in the state where you want to apply. You can find contact information for all of the State Boards of Nursing in the resources section of this article.

  Request the application for licensure by endorsement from the individual State Board of Nursing where you want to apply. You can also download the application directly from the state's Board of Nursing website.

  Complete the application. The application will ask for your identifying information, information about your education and experience and details about your NCLEX exam results.

  Complete a Live Scan or fingerprint card. Check with the State Board of Nursing for details about the fingerprint requirement in the state where you want to apply. If your state offers Live Scan, go to a Live Scan facility and pay the required fee. Alternatively, you can go to most police stations, pay the required fee and get a complete set of fingerprints using a hard card available at the police station.

  Request official transcripts from the nursing school(s) you attended. The official transcripts need to come directly from the school to the State Board of Nursing. You can find detailed instructions about where to send the transcripts on the application.

  Submit the application, a passport-size photo, your fingerprint card or Live Scan information and the required fee to the address listed on the application.
