Medical Help for Poor Families in Texas

With the rising cost of medical care in the United States, it is often difficult for low-income families to find affordable healthcare. Many families do not have insurance through their employer, leaving them with the full financial burden of medical services. However, if you live in Texas and are a low-income family, there are several programs available to help.

Texas Medicaid

• Both the state and federal governments fund Medicaid. There are not a set number of people who can receive Medicaid benefits, as it must be made available to all who qualify. Your family must meet income and eligibility requirements to qualify for this program. Income eligibility is figured by household size when measured against Federal Poverty Levels (FPL). Medicaid covers all your medical expenses in full, as long as you use approved medical providers.

County Indigent Health Care Program (CIHCP)

• This is for Texas residents who are not eligible for Medicaid. It provides healthcare services for residents administered through the county, public hospitals or hospital districts. A family must meet criteria in four categories to qualify: Residence, Household, Resources, and Income. If a person meets all qualifications, then they are eligible to receive medical services such as routine physicals, lab tests, immunizations and inpatient hospital services.

Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

• CHIP is for uninsured children of Texas residents who do not qualify for Medicaid. The income restrictions are not as restrictive as Medicaid, allowing families to make up to 200% of the FPL. This is similar to a private insurance. Families pay a yearly premium based on their income, and then pay co-pays for individual services received. Services such as prescriptions, doctor's office visits and inpatient hospital stays are covered.

Long-Term Care Services

• This is not a separate service, but is offered through Medicaid in conjunction with the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). This service is for your family members who are elderly, disabled, or have a lengthy illness. It provides for personal services for Medicaid recipients, such as assistance in dressing, preparing meals, and housework. It also provides for nursing care in the home or a facility, and hospice services where needed.
