How to Transfer From a Bed to a Wheel Chair
Wheelchair-users must make daily transfers, such as getting into the wheelchair from their bed. This usually requires the help of a home caregiver. When the proper technique is used, a patient can be transferred from his bed to his wheelchair quickly and comfortably, with no injury to himself or the caregiver.Instructions

1
Explain to the patient that you are going to help him get from his bed into the wheelchair. Encourage the patient to do as much of the transfer himself as possible.
-
2
Place the wheelchair as close to the bed as possible. Turn the chair toward the patient's strongest side to make the transfer easier for him.The wheels of the chair should be locked and the footrests moved aside.
-
3
Assist the patient in sitting up by placing a hand beneath his shoulders and supporting him. If you are using an adjustable bed, raise the head of the bed to put the patient in a sitting position. You may also need to lower the height of the adjustable bed so the patient's feet easily reach the floor.
-
4
Ask the patient to slowly move legs over the edge of the bed. If he requires assistance, place your arm under his knees and gently position his legs over the edge of the bed.
-
5
Assist the patient in standing up by wrapping your arms around his chest and lifting with your legs to raise him to a standing position. You may need the assistance of a second caregiver for this. If the patient requires a cane or walker, make sure it is within easy reach before beginning the transfer.
-
6
Ask patient to pivot his body toward the wheelchair as you continue to support him. If the patient is using a cane or walker, remain close to him to prevent him from falling.
-
7
Lower the patient gently into the wheelchair by bending forward with your arms still around his chest. Allow the patient to lower himself into the wheelchair if he is able.
-
8
Move the wheelchair's footrests back to the front and help the patient put his feet in them. Unlock the wheels. Make sure the patient is comfortably positioned before moving him.
