Joint Commission on Class Standards

As a nonprofit organization, The Joint Commission performs the certification and accreditation of over 18,000 U.S. health care programs and organizations. In doing so, The Joint Commission is able to ensure a level of quality in health care performance standards across the nation.
  1. Categories

    • Through its certification and accreditation services, The Joint Commission establishes standards across a broad spectrum of medical services. Categories of medical service providers include Ambulatory Health Care, Long-Term Care, Mental Health Care and others.

    Standards

    • Each medical service category identified by The Joint Commission includes individual standards related to individual components of each service. For instance, Ambulatory Health Care is broken down into standards such as Designating Controlled and/or Sensitive Areas, Hazardous Materials and Mounting Sharps Boxes/Containers. Each standard is related to different aspects of ambulatory care and service management.

    Updates

    • Updates to individual standards and categories are performed annually. However, this does not mean that all standards necessitate change. Instead, standards are updated to reflect changes within the categorized fields such as emerging technologies or information.
