How to Go to a VA Hospital

Veteran Affairs is a government organization that provides services to individuals who have served in the US armed forces. Veteran Affairs has established VA hospital facilities all over the the country to continue to provide medical services to retired and injured military men and women. Going to a VA hospital is a relatively simple task once you have all the necessary materials.

      Locate your nearest VA hospital. Go to the Veteran Affairs: Veteran Affairs National Facilities Locator (see Resources) and type in your location to find the nearest hospital.

      Go to the registration desk in the hospital. You do not need to make an appointment; however, you do need to bring with you a state ID and your DD-214 from the military.

      Fill out necessary paperwork given to you from the registration receptionist. The paperwork will ask questions such as name, address, Social Security number, dependants and health-related questions. The paperwork will take 20 to 30 minutes to complete.

      Present your paperwork to the registration receptionist along with your state ID, DD-214 and medical record if you have it. They will then take your photograph and create an ID card for you to bring on subsequent visits. The Veteran Affairs ID card will arrive to the address you provided within 10 to 14 days.
