State Water Filtration Equipment Certification

Some states within the U.S., including California and Wisconsin, have introduced regulations requiring water treatment equipment to be certified by state regulatory bodies to protect consumers from false claims about product qualities.
  1. Types

    • Water filtration systems can be positioned in two ways, which are whole house systems treating water for the entire house at the point of entry and point of use filters used on single faucets. Not all states certify equipment, with some such as New Hampshire, choosing to license water filtration system installers and engineers.

    Health

    • Certain states, including California, require water filtration equipment to be tested and evaluated by Departments of Health to prove the health claims made by water filter manufacturers. National Science Foundation and the American National Standards Institute, standards 42 and 53, test the filtration process of water treatment systems.

    Certification

    • State certification programs, such as those used in Wisconsin, require water filter systems be certified in order to be sold within the state. State testers examine the literature, installation instructions and the types of contaminants removed from water.
