How to Ship a Wheelchair

UPS, the U.S. Postal Service, and other shipping companies all have size and weight limits on what can be sent using their services. Most shipping companies have additional options for special items, but these are often expensive and can be avoided in most cases. If you're shipping a wheelchair, then your course of action will be determined by what kind of chair is being sent. Generally speaking, heavy-duty electrical wheelchairs are more difficult to pack and more expensive to ship than lighter models.

Determine the expected size and weight of the package. Weigh the wheelchair first; then add an extra 15 to 20 pounds and 5 inches on each measurement for the box and packing material. If your wheelchair is collapsible, then collapse it and measure its height and girth.

Decide on a carrier. The USPS ships a maximum weight of 70 pounds. UPS, DHL, and FedEx all ship a maximum of 150 pounds. UPS and DHL both allow a maximum length of 108 inches and a combined length and girth of 165 inches. FedEx allows a combined length and girth of 165 inches, while the USPS allows 130 inches.

Contact UPS or FedEx and ask about freight shipping services if your package turns out to be bigger than your carrier of choice will accept. You can find contact guidelines and other information at the UPS and FedEx websites.

Package your chair. A collapsible wheelchair can be shipped in a long, flat box. Purchase large boxes and packaging material at a furniture store. Get a box large enough to accommodate both the chair and the packaging. Staple the box shut at its opening before shipping.
