With the elderly and chronically-ill patients living longer than ever, it's possible that using a wheelchair may become a necessity at some point in their lives. Depending upon the person's physique and condition, there are several different sizes of wheelchair types that can be used.

Standard

• Standard wheelchairs are appropriate for people with normal upper body strength, or those who have a caretaker who can transport them. Dimensions for this type of chair are usually 40 inches to 45 inches high, 26 inches to 30 inches wide, and 28 inches to 36 inches long.

Electric (power)

• Electric (power) wheelchairs can be used for individuals with a very limited range of motion. The wheelchair dimensions run from 36 inches to 40 inches high, 30 inches to 36 inches wide, and 26 inches to 28 inches long.

Geri-Chair

• A geri-chair (or "geriatric" chair) is a type of wheelchair that is higher in the back than most other wheelchairs, which also reclines. It is usually used for patients whose treatments, such as dialysis or chemotherapy, require them to sit in one place for long periods of time; sitting in one place in a standard wheelchair may prove uncomfortable for some. Geri-chair dimensions run from 48 inches to 54 inches high, 28 inches to 46 inches wide, and 36 inches to 60 inches long.
