Oklahoma Medical Practice Act & Medical Assisting
The Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision established their Medical Practice Act as a set of rules physicians must follow when prescribing medical assistance or care. The purpose of the act is to protect patients by assuring they receive the proper diagnosis and treatment from their physicians.-
Medical Practice
-
The Medical Practice Act defines the practice of medicine as services being provided by a physician who treats and diagnosis patients in exchange for compensation. This physician must be licensed in Oklahoma.
Physician Requirements
-
Before prescribing any type of medical assistance, the physician is required to have a face-to-face consultation with the patient. This initial visit allows physicians to verify the patient's identity and become familiar with their medical history and symptoms. At this point, the physician makes a diagnosis and treatment plan. Physicians should arrange follow up visits at least once per year to maintain contact with their patients.
Complaint Process
-
Patients are encouraged to lodge complaints through the Oklahoma Medical Board against physicians who violate the Medical Practice Act. The Medical Board then investigates and take disciplinary action when necessary. For example, they would discipline a physician who does not meet with patients before prescribing medication.
