How to Report a Bad Optometrist

We trust optometrists with the health and care of our vision. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you know that most health-care plans require that you visit your optometrist annually if you want to get a prescription covered. However, an optometrist is also often the first health-care professional to notice a problem with the health of your eyes. These professionals are licensed by the state in which they operate. Your state's Board of Optometry will also hear complaints about an optometrist.

Instructions

    • 1

Attempt to resolve the complaint with your optometrist.

    • 2

Gather all documentation or details about the event as well as the full name, address and phone number of your optometrist.

    • 3

Contact your state's Board of Optometry for information on how to file a formal complaint. Contact the Association of Regulatory Boards of Optometry (see Resources), which provides links to each state's Board of Optometry. Most complaint processes require that you fill out a complaint form with the optometrist's information, your personal information and a description of the event.

    • 4

Mail, fax, or electronically submit the complaint form, in accordance with the instructions of your state's Board of Optometry.
