Grant Information on Becoming Health Inspector

Health inspectors are usually employed through the government or private businesses to make sure health and safety regulations are maintained. Becoming an inspector is not easy. You must first earn a bachelor's degree, then complete relevant training.
  1. Gaining a degree

    • Earn your degree.

The easiest way to become a health inspector is to gain a degree. Most employers, whether it be a government organization or a private business, look for a degree in a related subject (i.e. in a science or health related degree). If you know that being a health inspector is exactly what you want to do, you would be wise to specifically choose a degree which relates to this such as a degree in safety and sanitation.

    Volunteering and Internships

    • Write to different companies and ask for work experience. The sooner you do this (i.e. while you are in school) the better. Many companies will be happy for you to shadow a qualified health inspector. You will learn through experience the rules and regulations, as well as the day-to-day activities of a health inspector and what that actually entails. It will give you a good idea about what to expect from a job as a health inspector, and the company may be willing to give you a reference or a certificate that you can show to future employers.

    Applying for a Grant

    • The U.S Department of Health and Human Services and Grants.gov have different types of grants available to help individuals wanting to go into related health and human service careers such as being a health inspector. Depending on your situation and circumstance, you may be eligible for a grant to help with tuition costs or funding work experience, training and internships. See Grants.gov for more information and to see if you are eligible.

    Applying for Jobs

    • Many health inspection companies take on students or people who have had no experience on the job and train them internally. This usually means starting on less money, but you will have invaluable, on the job training. This type of training usually involves shadowing a qualified health inspector as well as attending classes or sessions held by the inspector. These are designed to give you the necessary information in order to pass internal exams and fully qualify as a health inspector.
