1
Schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor or with an ophthalmologist, a physician who has specialized training in eye disorders. When you meet with the doctor, describe the full range of your eye symptoms. This will help a doctor decide what tests she needs to perform.
-
2
Consent to the scanning laser ophthalmoscopy test. This procedure helps to create detailed images of the retina and can help diagnose conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and others. It is a relatively non-invasive test that does not require pre-test clearance.
-
3
Follow the doctor's instructions and sit on the specialized seat. You will then have to place your chin on a fixture to help keep your head steady. This is done so that when the procedure begins the doctor will be able to take high-definition images of your inner eye.
-
4
Relax when the doctor injects a chemical agent adjacent to your eye. This drug will help to dilate your pupils and will allow for a larger view into the retina. It will also help to prevent the pupils from suddenly constricting during later parts of the exam. At this point your doctor will instruct you to focuson a certain point in front of you.
-
5
Focus your eyes where the doctor says, and remain still. The doctor will use a mirror to send a laser into your eye. The laser will then reflect back and will be transmitted to a photomultiplier tube, which is a special kind of vacuum tube that detects light. This will enable the physician to obtain clear images of the retina.
