The Use of Simulation Labs in Nursing Programs to Improve Pass Rates
Simulation labs provide nursing students the opportunity to practice clinical applications risk-free. According to the Pennsylvania State University, simulation labs offer students a safe environment to make a mistake in, so in real world applications they will not make a mistake.-
Features
-
According to Penn State University, nursing simulation labs offer lifelike learning opportunities. Simulation labs include mannequins, task trainers and computer software. In addition to hospital beds, monitors and other equipment, mannequins are designed to be like actual patients. The patients can breathe, have a heart beat, can deliver a child, and even speak (with the help of an instructor's voice from another room).
Benefits
-
Students learn to conduct themselves as professionals in the field of nursing. Additionally, students are taught very early in nursing programs how to provide quality care. Simulation labs allow nursing students to make mistakes and learn from their mistakes without any actual harm to patients. Students become comfortable with administering medications and performing various procedures. They are able to learn without the fear of making a terrible mistake.
Outcomes
-
Simulation labs work. Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania uses a comprehensive simulation lab in its nursing program. As a result, in 2007 and in 2008 the school has seen a 100 percent pass rate when it comes to students passing their boards and becoming Registered Nurses.
