UMHS Nursing Policies
The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers (UMHS) are home to award-winning nurses. Receiving awards for best family-centered care and recruitment and retention, UMHS has many nursing policies. Nursing policies start with orientation and are integrated in day-to-day patient care.-
Opportunities
-
UMHS offers a variety of nursing opportunities. With more than 20 unique specialties to choose from, UMHS offers nursing opportunities for recent graduates and well-experienced nurses.
Orientation
-
New nurses at UMHS are required to participate in a six-day central orientation nursing program. Following this orientation, nurses receive orientation on their area of specialty. Duration of specialty orientation depends on the specific unit and the amount of experience a nurse has already acquired.
Licensure Requirements
-
Upon hiring, registered nurses (RNs) must have a license to practice as a nurse in Michigan. Graduate nurses awaiting exam results and licensure are eligible to work as graduate nurses. Graduate nurses work under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN).
Specialties
-
UMHS allows nurses to specialize in a particular field of care. Fields include ambulatory care, cardiology, critical care, dialysis, education, emergency, home health care services, surgical, oncology, pediatrics, case management, procedural areas, psychiatry, and labor and delivery.
Professional Development
-
By providing a host of resources, nurses are able to fulfill career goals and increase the quality of patient care. Programs include staff development, clinical placement, research partnerships, community outreach programs and nursing grand rounds.
