How to Push a Gurney

A gurney is a carrier with a flat surface on wheels that is used to push medical patients when they cannot walk or sit in a wheelchair. Knowing how to push a gurney can come in handy if you are training in the medical profession or volunteering at a hospital. You can implement some techniques to make pushing a gurney easier on yourself and on the patient you are moving.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the patient is securely positioned in the gurney before moving it. Gurneys have straps attached to the frame that can secure the patient much like a seat belt secures passengers in a car.

    • 2

Chart a course for the gurney to ensure you have a smooth path to push on. Flat hallways or sidewalks will be easier to navigate than bumpy terrain such as a lawn or cobblestones. Determine the best path before moving.

    • 3

Position yourself behind the head of the gurney and place a hand at each side of the gurney, making sure you have a firm grip on the frame.

    • 4

Apply light to moderate pressure to gently move the gurney forward down the path you've charted toward your end destination, such as a hospital room or ambulance. If you reach a corner, gently push on one side of the gurney to turn it.

    • 5

Ask for help from another nurse or individual if it takes more than moderate pressure to move the gurney. Two assistants are sometimes needed to move heavier patients.
