How to Use an Electric Hoyer Lift
Sling lifts, commonly referred to as Hoyer lifts, are often used to aid in the transfer of patients with limited mobility from their beds to chairs, wheelchairs, bedside toilets or bathtubs. This type of lift is powered either electrically or manually and features a movable base and a sling that supports the patient as he is raised or lowered. Sling lifts are beneficial in reducing the risk of injury to patients and caregivers.Instructions

1
Explain to the patient that you will be using a sling lift to move him from his bed to the desired location. The patient should be informed of what to expect during the transfer and that the lift is used for his safety.
-
2
Assist the patient in rolling to one side. Depending on the patient's condition and level of mobility, the assistance of a second person may be required for this. Encourage the patient to hold on to side rails for support.
-
3
Fold the sling in half lengthwise and place beneath the patient.
-
4
Assist the patient in rolling onto other side.
-
5
Pull the folded portion of the sling until it is flat on bed.
-
6
Assist the patient in rolling onto his back.
-
7
Position the base of the lift under the patient's bed or chair and lock the wheels. Side rails should be up, and the bed should be raised to its highest position.
-
8
Attach the sling to the lift. Directions for attaching the sling will vary depending on the type of sling used.
-
9
Press the "Down" button on the lift's power pack to lower the lift cradle over the patient's bed and attach the sling. The lift's wheels can now be unlocked.
-
10
Press the "Up" button on the lift's power pack to begin raising the patient until his buttocks are slightly above the mattress.
-
11
Grasp the patient's legs and gently turn them so that the legs are dangling over the side of the bed. If the lift is self-leveling, it will pull the patient into a sitting position.
-
12
Steer the lift to the desired location (chair, wheelchair, etc.) and position the patient over the seat.
-
13
Press the "Down" button on the lift's power pack and slowly lower the patient into the seat.
