Health Information Systems Certification

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has come up with a certification to qualify a health-care worker with the proper training and knowledge as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS). This is the standard certification in the heath information systems field.This professional certification helps to promote career advancement and high health-care standards by proving the worker's skills. Certification requires a certain level of education, an application process, passing an exam, and continuing education to maintain the certification.

    Requirements

    • To qualify to take the CPHIMS exam, you must have either a bachelor's degree plus five years of information and management systems experience, three of which must be in health care, or a graduate degree and three years of information and management systems experience, two of which must be in health care. If you qualify, you can then apply to take the exam, for which a fee is charged. The exam is 115 multiple-choice questions, which you have two hours to complete.

    Continuing Education Requirements

    • To keep your certification, you must complete HIMSS or HIMSS-approved continuing professional education activities over the three-year period before renewal is due. You must complete 45 CEUs, (Continuing Education Units), 25 of which must be from HIMSS. You must also pay a renewal fee.
